About me

I’m Dr. M. Choundappan, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon currently practicing in Salem, Tamil Nadu. I specialize in reconstructive microsurgery, trauma reconstruction, and aesthetic procedures, with a commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care.

My medical journey began at Madras Medical College, Chennai—one of India’s most prestigious and historic medical institutions. Infact it is one of the oldest medical colleges in Asia and the oldest in India. Known for its rigorous training and distinguished alumni, Madras Medical College laid the foundation for my clinical discipline and surgical precision. I earned both my MBBS and MS in General Surgery from this institution, completing my postgraduate surgical training in 2017.

Driven by a passion for complex reconstructive work, I pursued my MCh in Plastic Surgery at Madurai Medical College and graduated in 2020. By the time I completed my residency I had logged 1000 cases over 3 years. To further refine my microsurgical skills, I completed my fellowship in Reconstructive Microsurgery at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Jaipur, in 2024. In 2025, I undertook an advanced fellowship in Cosmetic Plastic Surgery at Tamira Plastic Surgery Center, Chennai, where I honed my aesthetic surgical techniques under expert mentorship.

Professionally, I have served as Assistant Professor and Senior Resident in Plastic Surgery at Tirunelveli Medical College. Since October 2023, I have been practicing as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Dharan Hospital, Salem, managing a wide spectrum of cases from trauma to cosmetic procedures.

Over the years, I’ve presented at numerous national and regional conferences, including APSICON, TANPAPS, and DFSICON. I stay actively involved in continued medical education through workshops and CME programs, with special interests in diabetic foot management, burns, and soft tissue reconstruction.

My academic contributions include multiple peer-reviewed publications on topics such as necrotizing fasciitis, bear maul injuries, albino patient reconstruction, and rare nerve tumors. I was honored to receive the Prof. Sam C. Bose and Dr. Mehboob Ali Award in 2020 for the best outgoing PG student in Plastic Surgery.

I believe that great outcomes come from a blend of surgical skill, clinical judgment, and empathy. Whether it’s restoring function after trauma or enhancing form through aesthetic procedures, my approach is always tailored to the unique needs of each patient.
