What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is the benign enlargement of breast tissue in males, caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. It can occur in infants, during puberty, or in older men due to natural hormonal changes, certain medications, health conditions, or lifestyle factors.
Are You a Candidate?
You may be an ideal candidate for gynecomastia surgery if:
- You are in good general health.
- Your breast development is stable and not caused by a reversible medical condition or medication.
- You have realistic expectations about the outcome.
- You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too large.
- Exercise and diet have not resolved the issue.
- The skin of your breast is elastic and will redrape smoothly after tissue removal.
Your Personalized Surgical Plan at [Your Clinic Name]
During your confidential consultation, our surgeon will assess your condition and determine the best surgical approach. Gynecomastia is not one-size-fits-all; treatment depends on the composition of tissue causing the enlargement (glandular tissue, fatty tissue, or both) and the degree of skin laxity.
Surgical Techniques We Offer:
- Liposuction: Ideal for cases where the enlargement is primarily due to excess fatty tissue. A small cannula is inserted through tiny incisions to suction out the fat, sculpting a new chest contour.
- Excision: Necessary for removing firm, glandular breast tissue or when excess skin must also be removed. This technique requires a small incision, which is strategically placed around the areola (the pigmented skin around the nipple) or within the natural contours of the chest to minimize visibility.
- Combined Liposuction and Excision: This is the most common approach. Liposuction effectively removes the fatty component, while excision precisely removes the firm glandular tissue, allowing for optimal contouring and a truly masculine result.
The surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, ensuring your comfort throughout the procedure.
Your Post-Operative Care & Recovery Instructions
Proper care after surgery is essential for a smooth recovery and optimal results. Please follow these guidelines closely.
First 24-72 Hours:
- Rest: Plan to take it easy. Keep your upper body elevated when lying down to reduce swelling.
- Compression Garment: You will be fitted with a special compression vest. Wear this 24/7 as directed (typically for 4-6 weeks). This minimizes swelling, supports healing tissues, and helps your skin conform to your new chest contour.
- Pain Management: You will be prescribed pain medication. Take it as directed. Discomfort is usually manageable and subsides within a few days.
- Drains: If surgical drains are placed, you will be instructed on how to empty and care for them. They are usually removed within the first week.
- Light Movement: Move your arms gently and take short walks to promote circulation, but avoid strenuous activity.
First Two Weeks:
- Swelling and Bruising: This is normal and will peak around day 3-4 before gradually improving. Arnica Montana supplements or gel may help reduce bruising.
- Showering: You may be cleared for a shower 48-72 hours post-op. Pat incisions dry gently; do not rub.
- Work: Most patients return to sedentary jobs within 3-5 days.
- Activity: Absolutely no heavy lifting, straining, or vigorous exercise. Do not raise your arms above your shoulders excessively.
3-6 Weeks and Beyond:
- You may gradually resume light exercise (e.g., jogging, lower body workouts) after 3-4 weeks, with your surgeon’s approval.
- Chest exercises and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least 6 weeks.
- Continue wearing your compression garment as advised, often for 12 hours a day during the latter phase.
- Scars will be red and firm initially. They will gradually fade and soften over 6-12 months. We will provide you with scar management protocols (e.g., silicone sheets/gel).
Important Notes:
- Follow-Up: Attend all scheduled post-operative appointments so we can monitor your healing.
- Call Our Office Immediately if you experience signs of infection (increased redness, warmth, pus, fever), severe pain not relieved by medication, or any other concerning symptoms.
Seeing Your Results
While you will see an immediate improvement in your chest contour, the final results will emerge as the swelling subsides. This can take several months. The results of gynecomastia surgery are typically permanent, provided you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.
